Transmit 3

I had only one wish for the Trasmit upgrade – the option to select TextMate as my preferred external editor. Thankfully, Panic has granted my wish.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a truckload of new features in Transmit 3 (Column views, iDisk, sidebar favourites, SSL/FTP, Search, spring loaded folders, tabbed servers and tabbed browsing, Dock sending, etc etc), but having TextMate as an available editor means I can finally get rid of BBEdit.

I’m not really one to bash BBEdit (or any software really), but suffice to say I love TextMate and find that it offers me virtually endless room for customisation and a huge boost to my productivity. Having to revert to BBEdit to edit files from an FTP server was an absolute pain.

It may have been a complete coincidence, or even a cleaver strategic move on behalf of Gruber and the makers of Interarchy, but I found it quite amusing that he published his article Apps of the Year, 2004 (in which he named Interarchy 7 as his favourite FTP program, and then dedicated around 1000 words to the subject) on the exact same day that Panic released their update to Transmit.

I’m not suggesting any huge conspiracy, nor am I suggesting that Gruber (my favourite Mac author) was paid for his commentary, or trying to start an FTP Client War, or anything like that… I’m just saying it was an amusing turn of events.

Anyway, I’ll give Transmit a few days of testing to make sure I’m completely happy, and Panic will have my $17.95 for sure.
