Backpack Does Everything

Published 3 May 05 by Justin French

There’s no way I can possibly tie it down to a short, succinct description. Absolutely anyone could find a use for Backpack, and with a very reasonable pricing structure (including a freebie of course), I think tens of thousands of people will get on board very quickly.

There’s so much I could talk about, and it showcases many of the newer features in Rails beautifully, but the most interesting feature is the email interface.

My biggest gripe with Basecamp has always been the long-ish process needed to get information into it (open a browser, go to the right URL, login, click around a bit, fill in a form, click submit, etc), but with Backpack, I can post a reminder (or any type of content really – files, notes, to-do lists, etc) in a matter of seconds.

I can see myself typing a few notes into a blank email while I’m on the phone with a client, hitting send, and I’m done!

The good news for those of you without a golden ticket is that you won’t have to wait long at all – the rumoured launch date is May 3rd!

Update: Backpack is now live
