Goodbye CocoaMySQL?

It’s been a long time since CocoaMySQL 0.5 was released back in September 2003, and it would appear that it’s development has basically stopped dead.
CocoaMySQL is fine I guess, but it’s not exactly a well refined piece of software. It’s wonderful alternative to the clunky, slow, ugly world of phpMyAdmin, but there’s a lot of little things about it that frustrated me, and a lot of things missing.
Looking down the list of features in YourSQL, it looks like they’ve taken care of most of my wish list, so the future of MySQL GUI interaction on OS X looks very promising — and the fact that it’s being actively developed is far more important than the current feature list, as far as I’m concerned.
I’m really busy with real work right now, but I’ve had a quick play around and it already feels much more comfortable to work with:
- The 3 column connection > database > table browser works so much better than CocoaMySQL’s pull-downs and connection dialogues
- The table design interface is much much nicer to work with, using spreadsheet-style text fields and contextual menus instead of those awkward CocoaMySQL drop-downs which always seemed to get in the way instead of help
- It remembers the column widths when browsing table data, which was immensely frustrating in CocoaMySQL
I predict that CocoaMySQL will disappear from my Dock in less than a week.
But in my opinion, what YourSQL really needs is a nice new Dock icon to replace the current thing that I can only describe as “a can of dolphin” – anyone care to knock up a slick new icon for them?
